OPCUG - the OLLI Personal Computer User Group, is a club activity of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University, and open to members of the Tallwood, Reston, and Loudoun campuses. It is devoted to helping members learn about Windows and Mac computers, the Internet, LANs, tablets, smartphones, apps, and related consumer electronics technology, such as digital cameras and video, music players, WiFi, television, GPS, and whatever comes next!

Members are requested to wear their OLLI badges at meetings, to facilitate social interaction, and help facilitate Q&A sessions of the group.

History: Based on a number of requests from OLLI members, Paul Howard, Co-chair of OLLI's AV Support Committee, sought out expressions of interest with a small article in the ENews. With more than 25 people responding within a few weeks, planning was underway quickly, with the first meeting scheduled Saturday, January 17th, 2009.

More than 50 OLLI members paid dues and joined OPCUG during 2009. OPCUG affiliated with the Association of Personal Computer User Groups, (APCUG) a national association devoted to helping computer groups provide enhanced value for their members. Twelve meetings were held jointly with WACUG, the Washington Area Computer User Group, in the first year. (In May, 2012, WACUG merged with another club, and became the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society - PATACS. ) Total attendance at these meetings was 469. Presentation material and other information originating at the meetings may be found at the web site's "recent meetings" page. One of the highlights of the year was a 'webinar' presentation in July, with the speaker located in St. George, Utah offering a PowerPoint session on a hard drive imaging product and backup techniques, to an enthusiastic audience in TA1.

Reports to the OLLI Board of Directors about OPCUG activities are available on the Communications page of this web site.
